With Team Chemistry and Talent, Mohawk Mountaineers Men’s Basketball Team Aim for Strong Start to the Season

The Mountaineers are undefeated through their first two exhibition games this season and hope to continue the winning streak. Mohawk is further building on a successful last season, which ended in an OCAA quarter-final appearance against the George Brown Huskies. 

“I believe we have a very good team… we got a lot of guys back from last year which allows us to kind of start ahead of where we were at this point last year,” said Mountaineers men’s basketball head coach Jamie Girolametto. 

“Guys are familiar with our system, and the new guys we brought in are very talented and competitive, as long as we stay healthy we should be pretty good.” 

With strong team chemistry already established coach Girolametto is focused on hard work and preparation.

“If we can prepare ourselves in the right way then the players can play free. So I want our players to make decisions for themselves on the court and play hard,” said Girolametto. 

Fourth-year Forward Harpreet Gill aka Happy explained how the team prepares for the road ahead. 

“[We’re doing] everything it takes to be a championship team, we’re in the weight room, keeping each other accountable making sure we’re doing the little things,” said Gill. 

“The biggest thing of all is we’re student-athletes. We’re students first and athletes second so making sure the school stuff is taken care of because the on-court stuff, were not too worried about, were a talented group of guys, we know the goal, we’re hungry we just got to eliminate outside factors.”

Confidence is key, and the Mountaineers feel they have the talent to win games even in such a competitive conference. 

“We never go to a game thinking we’re gonna lose, we’re a great team, we can all get a bucket, we’re gonna see what happens, we’ve been cursed with injuries the last couple years but we’ve been knocking on the door so hopefully we can kick that door down,” said Gill.
