‘We’re doing it for a cause:’ Step Up For Wayside

The annual Step Up for Wayside 5k walk was held on Oct. 14 at Hamilton’s Bayfront Park.

Wayside is a not-for-profit addiction treatment centre that supports housing for men  and young men across Ontario who are facing addiction.

Wayside CEO Regan Anderson said the fundraiser raised roughly $65,000.

“Wayside has been in Hamilton since 1967,” CEO Regan Anderson said. “We provide addiction treatment for men and male youth and we also have supportive housing, a health navigator program, and a shelter help outreach treatment team.”

The walk raises funds and awareness for those in addiction recovery.

“We’re raising money today for support programs and to enhance the services we have,” Anderson said.

“We did this walk to raise money,” Ward 7 Coun. Esther Pauls added. “For helping, for supportive housing for people with mental health or addiction…[Wayside is] a great organization.”

Despite the rainy and windy weather, many Hamiltonians came out for the annual event.

“The weather is not great today but it doesn’t matter because we’re doing it for a cause,” Pauls said. “A cause that helps people with drug addiction, helping them with mental health. It’s so important to have that in our city.”

This year’s Step Up For Wayside raised about $65,000.
