‘We want them to feel special’: Celebrating birthdays with the MSA

The Mohawk Students’ Association (MSA) Student Centre in Fennell’s G-wing was alive with vibrant balloons, party hats, and a festive tune as Mohawk students gathered to celebrate a day just for them – their birthday.

One day each month, the MSA hosts a birthday celebration on their campuses. This month, Mohawk students could come on Oct. 4 and earn themselves free treats.

Oussama Elafrit, Brand Ambassador for the MSA, was managing another booth but still wished students a happy birthday as they stopped by.

“We give away free cake, we give away free pins that have fun sayings on them, like ‘Octoboo Babies’ for example.”

Guadalupe Saito, the engagement coordinator for the MSA, was standing at the birthday booth just outside the Arnie, taking photographs and handing out goodies.

“To all of us at the MSA, the students here at Mohawk are really important,” Saito said. “We want them to feel special on their birthday, so that’s why we’ve decided to start celebrating the October babies and the September babies and so on.”

With thousands of students to manage and consider at Mohawk, the MSA wants to ensure that their campus community never feels left out, especially on a day all about them.

“We want to connect with students and give them a little gift,” Saito said. “I think it’s extra important for international students, sometimes they don’t have family here, and it’s very nice to celebrate with them.”

For next month, Fennell campus students can obtain their birthday gifts in front of the Arnie from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 7, and students at the Institute for Applied Health Sciences (IAHS) campus in the first-floor student lounge from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Nov. 11.

Students are required to bring their government ID with their birth date on it and their Mohawk OneCard to receive their free items.

For the rest of the year, make sure to stay updated on when your birthday will be celebrated by checking the MSA calendar and following @msamohawk on Instagram.
