The 2024-25 season is quickly approaching for the Mohawk Mountaineers women’s basketball team, and hopes are high that the team can build on last season’s success.
Equipped with a cast of returning players and some new blood, the team is gearing up for their Oct. 19 home and season opener.
“This year’s team is very cohesive […] the culture has been embraced from day one. They’re growing together, they’re loving each other,” Mihai Raducanu, the Mountaineer’s head coach said. “Our mantra is love, positivity, analyze not criticize, and win an OCAA championship.”
This is where the bar is set for the team this year, after being ranked as high as tenth in the country last year at the college level.
Mohawk College is hosting a series of U Sports challengers this pre-season to get a feel for where they are as a team.
“It’s a good test, to get woken up real early, to get exposed real early,” Raducanu said. “See what we are missing, see what we need to work on.”
The Mountaineers will be hosting McMaster University on Sept. 24, Guelph University on the 26, and Toronto Metropolitan University on Oct. 4. However, the big day that everyone should be waiting for is their season opener on Oct. 19th.
“It’s probably the biggest crowd we are going to get this year,” Tiffany Williams, who is going into her second year on the team said.
Williams was named to the OCAA all-rookie team
last season.
