Mohawk’s large and winding campus can leave much of the school to be explored, with workspaces and community areas throughout the school sometimes finding the right space can be difficult.
The DCC or Digital Creativity Centre is one of these spaces that offers students a quiet space to work or relax as well as a chance to work on computer programs students may not have regular access to.
The space is located in EA105 and is home to a state-of-the-art computer lab featuring more than 15 top-tier desktops for academic or casual use. The DCC also includes six fully accessible meeting rooms and a streaming/podcast studio for student use that requires online signout.
On top of the hardware offered to students, the DCC also has a tech service desk for any questions or help that may be needed.
“I’m a digital skills technician (DST) at the DCC, our jobs are to meet students as they come in and see how we can help them,” said Christopher Arndt.
“Our goal is, if you have a problem we can solve it and if you have an idea we will try our very best to make it happen, without doing your work for you.”
The DCC is more than just an academic or casual spot for students to hang out though as they offer weekly tech-based workshops.
“We host workshops constantly, we host a workshop every Wednesday at the common hour (noon). Each week one of us DSTs gives some expertise on something, and we provide guidance on programs we are familiar with,” said Arndt.
The DCC is an ever-changing space that will continue to grow and change with student needs and demands.
“We’re constantly working to tailor the DCC to the people who come in. Whoever comes in actually does have our ear on what they want to see the space become,” said Arndt.
One student recommendation that is commonly thrown around is the idea of an Esports team.
“I’d love to play games for the school, I love Counter-Strike and have been playing for years I’d be super interested in joining a competitive team,” said Mohawk student Luke Bucciol.
Deeper than the students love for gaming, there’s also real interest in potential Esports teams from the school and DCC organizers.
“Esports is definitely something that can happen in this space, especially given that some of our programs are focusing on that, it won’t happen overnight… but we’ve had so many people coming in suggesting it,” said Arndt.
The people running the DCC are really just proud of the fact that the school can be used for more than just your academic projects and the overall potential of the Digital Creativity Centre.
