The college experience and mental health

Danger sign on door.
It is currently unknown when the renovations will be completed.

With all that’s going on in the world, and the end of the semester approaching, the pressure is on for Mohawk College students. Mental health is an important topic that has been frequently addressed and studied in recent years.

Estefanía López-Ramírez, the Health Promotion Specialist for the Health and Wellness Centre-HS, said, “I wish Mohawk students knew they were not alone and that taking care of their mental health is not a sign of weakness. The school, especially the Health and Wellness Centre, offers multiple resources to support them. However, some students are still unaware of these supports.”

Room C109 has been under construction for the Fall 2024 semester, so students must book an appointment at the place formerly known as The Square. The front desk is in the space between The Campus Store (C104) and the Registrar’s Office (C102).

Counselling services are available to all full-time students and are included in tuition fees. The counselling sessions are completely confidential unless you or a minor are in any serious danger.

The Health and Wellness Centre is open every weekday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Self-care, for me, is something we practice every day. When you make choices that support your mental health and well-being, you are practicing self-care,” Ramírez added.

Part of being a college student is interacting with others and making new friendships. The current youth loneliness epidemic is increasing the risk of depression and anxiety in new generations. As a result, social interaction is becoming essential for college students.
