Super Saturday almost a perfect success for Mohawk Mountaineers

What’s better than a Mohawk Mountaineers game? Try four Mountaineers games in one day, resulting in three victories and a crowd of overjoyed fans.

On Saturday Nov. 5, Mohawk faced off against long-time rival Redeemer University in four separate matches – women’s volleyball, men’s volleyball, women’s basketball and men’s basketball.

At the end of the day, the Mountaineers took home victories in women’s volleyball, men’s volleyball and men’s basketball, but lost to the Royals in the women’s basketball game.

The stands in the Mohawk College gym are seen packed full of people watching the game.
The crowd filled the stands and cheered the teams on.

Even with the loss, Super Saturday was a success for the Mountaineers. The night marked four consecutive wins for the men’s basketball and women’s volleyball teams – a streak both teams are determined to continue through the season.

“I think we play very well as a team,” Brian Jonker, head coach for the Mountaineers men’s basketball team, said. “We are getting contributions from so many people that it is impossible to play badly. The guys like to play with each other and that contributes to our game.”

The court wasn’t the only place to find liveliness and chemistry. Spirits were high as friends, relatives and Mohawk students past and present came together to watch their alma mater take to the court.

DBARC employees set up tables of discounted Mountaineers merchandise for the excited fans, who browsed through the selections before heading to their seats.

Mohawk student Giovanni Umana had an especially large smile on his face as the night went on. He said he came out to show support to his wife, Irene Jaramillo.

“I’m really happy, it was a really good game,” he said. “My wife was playing in volleyball, so [watching the team win] was a really fantastic moment.”

Others expressed relief finally to have an opportunity to come together after two years of lockdowns and restrictions.

“I think [the games] are great for student life,” Mohawk College student Gage Babin said. “We’ve been cooped up for so long with the pandemic, it’s nice to get out and watch live sports again, participate and kind of be a part of something.”
