Social Inc. uses film to promote diversity and inclusion at Mohawk College

Mohawk College is committed to nurturing an equitable, diverse and inclusive environment for everyone, whether students or staff.

With Social Inc., this inclusion is seen every week with their film recommendations, posted on Mohawk’s event calendar.

Every Friday sees a new film spotlighting particular issues such as the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, mental health within the Black community and movies about disabilities. Social Inc. also posts film recommendations occasionally on Wednesdays or Mondays.

While these films might not be blockbuster movies shown in theatres, they range from television episodes to TED Talks that are accessible through YouTube or other streaming platforms available for all to watch, no matter the day. Students can look ahead through the month to see which films are being recommended to them.

Social Inc. was not available for comment but their website highlights their point of view on being a welcoming space for all.

“Social Inc. is a space that welcomes and supports students by embracing and implementing an intersectional, anti-oppression framework to promote human rights, equity and inclusion, while also working to identify, prevent and eliminate all forms of discrimination within the college community,” the front page of their website reads.

Being inclusive and accepting always calls for proof and the weekly film recommendations show students that they are welcome in Mohawk’s community, as their struggles are recognized not only through the work Social Inc. does and the space they provide but also through a watchable format that highlights the struggles and the triumphs of the people who look just like them.

One of the upcoming films Social Inc. is recommending to students is a TEDx Talk by Sonay Erten about embracing ADHD and Autism. Additionally, Social Inc. is recommending a 16-minute YouTube video about Hidden Disabilities.
