The push for environmental responsibility is gaining momentum at Mohawk College, with students taking charge through programs like the Green Leaders Initiative and the Eco Squad.
Sebastian Schoer, an Architectural Design sophomore, emphasizes the urgency of sustainability.
“Our generation will bear the brunt of climate change impacts,” Schoer notes. “It’s important that we take action now with the resources we have.”
The Green Leaders Initiative, a complimentary course on MyCanvas, provides students to incorporate sustainability into their day-to-day lives. Participants earn credit for their extracurricular transcript while mastering concepts like resource conservation and eco-conscious practices.
Students can also participate in the Eco Squad, a group of volunteers promoting campus sustainability. Squad members help with waste management, raise awareness, and engage in community events. After participating in five activities, volunteers receive an eco toolkit and credit toward their extracurricular transcript.
Mohawk College has been a leader in sustainability since 2011, becoming the first college in Ontario to adopt a comprehensive Environmental Management Plan.
Alumni like Meryl Sheppard, who graduated from Mohawk’s Environmental Technology program, continue to contribute to these efforts, highlighting the importance of staying involved in sustainability initiatives even after graduation.
“It’s essential to remain connected to sustainability efforts after college,” says Sheppard. “The habits we build as students can have a lasting impact, and Mohawk provides us with the knowledge and resources to continue making a difference.”
Mohawk is also conducting the Student Environmental Survey 2024, inviting learners to share ideas on integrating sustainability into campus life. Participants have a shot at winning a $250 VISA gift card.
Through the Green Leaders Initiative, Eco Squad involvement, or survey participation, Mohawk students demonstrate their potential as catalysts for a more sustainable future.
