The season of giving and receiving is almost upon the city of Hamilton. Mohawk College has set up various donation drives, including a toy drive, a food drive, and a recently ended clothing drive.
Laura Cocklin, a fifth-semester Mohawk College student, and her classmates organized the food drive as part of a class project.
“With our Holiday Food Drive Event, we have strong beliefs that given the current economic state of Ontario with inflation that everyone deserves to be able to have access to food this Holiday season without having to stress about being able to afford it,” Cocklin said.
Donations obtained from Cocklin’s food drive will be going towards the Good Shepherd Homeless Shelter.The Mohawk Mountaineers are once again holding a yearly toy drive until Dec. 11th. Personal hygiene products, such as soap, are also being accepted for donations.
Satbir Singh, the Mohawk Mountaineers’ sports information, media, and marketing director, emphasized the initiative’s impact.
“This heartwarming initiative, organized by Mountaineer student-athletes, has been a cherished tradition for several years, bringing together the Mohawk community to collect toys and essential toiletries for children and families in need during the holiday season,” Singh said.
“Each year, the Mohawk Athletics Department partners with a local Hamilton-based organization to ensure the donations reach those who will benefit most. For 2024, all donations will support the Eva Rothwell Centre, a local non-profit dedicated to providing essential community services, including health and wellness program, educational initiatives, and welcoming space for individuals and families to belong.”
For the month of November, all varsity games will require an admission of one food item or toy. Donations can be dropped off at R105 in the David Braley Athletic & Recreation Centre.
