International Market Fashion Show earns thunderous applause

Mohawk College has over 7,000 international students originating from 99 countries. International students make up approximately 40 per cent of Mohawk College’s students. To celebrate such a wide variety of cultures, the Mohawk Students Association hosted the International Market and Fashion Show.

Students had the opportunity to reserve a table to display trinkets from their community and culture. Countries represented at the event include the Philippines, Thailand, and Armenia.

Falafel and spring rolls were among the food items served.
Upon arrival, attendees were given “passports” and could receive free food served by the MSA if they collected three stickers from the booths set up around the Arnie.

Angel Carigurian was one of the students representing the Philippines booth, engaging event attendees with a trivia game mixed with beer pong.

“Our game is like beer pong without beer. The point is, you choose a ball and if you do we will ask you a question, give you a fun fact, or play games with you. If you answered, we would give you candy and a sticker to put on your passport for free food.”

Some students brought baked goods to their booth and let International Market attendees try one.

Gohar Ghazaryan was one of the few who not only decorated a table but also participated in the fashion show in her traditional Armenian attire.

“The national food of Armenia is the pomegranate. The pomegranate symbolizes fertility, eternity, and good luck,” Ghazaryan explained, “It is said that pomegranates have 365 seeds inside, symbolizing the circle of the year.”
