Part of our work at Ignite News requires us to set aside our biases and report on people’s lived experiences. In the past, however, the media hasn’t always been aware that these experiences aren’t the same for Black people, Indigenous Peoples, and People of Colour, also known as BIPOC. In fact, they can be drastically different from what most of Canada’s (predominantly white) journalists experience.
That’s why our third-year journalism students embarked on a project to amplify the voices of BIPOC at Mohawk College. Spearheaded by editors Clarissa Dela Fuente and Savannah Morris, we created a special issue of Ignite News that we hope is a true representation of equity, diversity and inclusion at Mohawk.
