Hamilton’s annual Fall Garden & Mum Show takes visitors back in time

Hamilton’s Fall Garden & Mum Show has a long history dating back to 1920, but this year’s theme took visitors even further back in time: to the medieval era.

Music, activities, props and a variety of floral displays set up throughout Gage Park Greenhouse worked together to set the theme.

A scavenger hunt activity encouraged children to explore the all of the displays.

Within the floral arrangements, 200 varieties of chrysanthemums and over 100,000 blooms were used to bring the event to life. The flowers created a variety of medieval displays such as a large throne, tapestries, a horse and a medieval market.

Visitors also had the opportunity to purchase plants, decorate pots and build bouquets for an additional cost.

Audie McCarthy has attended the event for the past three years. She said her favourite part of the annual show is the variety.

“The themes, the creativity, the demonstration of the talent of the people that are able to put the show together, that’s what brings me back every year,” McCarthy said.

Visitors could see a variety of figures and structures created with flowers and other plants.

In addition to the colourful displays, a market of small businesses was available for visitors to browse and shop.

VF Creations owner Victoria Frank said she has been selling her painted glassware at the event for the past 16 years.

“I love to paint on glass, and I absolutely love flowers. This is the perfect venue to be,” Frank said.

Glassware painted by Victoria Frank, owner of VF Creations, was available for purchase.

Frank added that she has a deep appreciation for the time and effort it takes to make the show a reality.

“The hours put in to put those flowers in [the displays] and then getting them to last the full ten days … there is so much behind the scenes that people don’t think about,” she said.

The medieval-themed Fall Garden & Mum Show will continue until Oct. 29, with next year’s show set to be a Candy Land theme.
