Mohawk College’s Harvest Festival was full of attention-grabbing activities on Oct. 2.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Mohawk Students’ Association (MSA) plaza, which usually houses nothing more than picnic tables, had been transformed into a fall-themed wonderland.
If the smooth vocal tones of the Hamilton-based band Stardust Duo covering country classics like Tennessee Whiskey weren’t enough to draw students in, the promise of free popcorn, apple cider and cotton candy was equally as enticing.
Once the clocks hit noon and students were let out of classes for common hour, the plaza became a bustling celebration for the new season.
The attraction with the biggest crowd for the entirety of the festival was the petting zoo set up by Triple C Farm. Once attendees sanitized their hands they were able to pet and interact with several different animals including rabbits, goats, an alpaca and even a donkey named Randy.
When asked about his thoughts on the festival and being pet by strangers all day, Randy simply breathed gently into the microphone and declined to comment further.
Triple C is based in Ancaster and is run by owners Tricia and Pascal Simons, with help from their three sons Geoffrey, Michael and Richard. All of the animals present on their farm have been rescued, which employee Jessica Stevens says means a lot.
“We offer the animals a second opportunity at life, which is kind of amazing to see,” said Stevens.
The festival also brought some fun attractions such as a towering rock climbing wall and a midway tub ride provided by Kiddies Fun Trak, and the MSA hosted a few games such as a life-sized Connect Four and axe throwing, with some small prizes to be won.
Additionally, students could get their photos taken in front of a fall-themed backdrop, complete with plenty of pumpkins.
