Hamilton’s food scene is quickly evolving into one of Canada’s best and most diverse. Restaurants specializing in food from cultures all over the world can be found throughout the city, and the city’s fine dining options are gaining international recognition.
Quatrefoil in Dundas became one of just two Ontario restaurants outside of Toronto to be recommended in the famous Michelin Guide, which also awarded Berkley North on King William Street the Bib Gourmand award for best value.
But for college students some of these fancy dining options might be a bit out of budget. Luckily Hamilton also offers a plethora of great food options at reasonable prices.
Townhall, 581 Concession St.
Townhall’s website describes itself as a “food court, but like cooler”. This one location offers six different dining choices, from pub food to breakfast, and tacos to ice cream, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Townhall also doubles as a “ghost kitchen”, where locations that exclusively sell food on delivery apps like UBER Eats and DoorDash cook all their meals, so if you have ever tried to find where Hamilton’s MrBeast Burger is, this is where your smash burgers are coming from.
Townhall also accepts Mohawk College One Cards, making it especially accepting to college students.
541 Eatery, 541 Barton St. East
The 541 Eatery is a non-profit cafe that serves people from all walks of life in Hamilton.
This volunteer-driven eatery is proud to offer fulfilling breakfasts Tuesday-Saturday for at cost, keeping its customers full, and their wallets happy.
The 541 also takes donations in order to feed the homeless in Hamilton. So far this year they have been able to donate over 3500 meals to CAMH to feed the encampment population in Hamilton.
Duarte’s, 417 Barton St. East
Duarte’s Supermarket and deli is an east-end classic for great authentic Itanian foods. Their subs are what they are known for, with what they humbly call a small size run about $5 and are easily a whole meal on to themselves.
Duarte’s is also a supermarket, and so offer a variety of pantry basics, imported goods, and frozen meals that are as tasty as they are a good deal.
